Two Dogs Looking for a Home

Bernadette needs help in trying to find someone who can take two dogs. She has not been able to find a home for them and will be leaving Chennai on August 13th.
They are under one year old and have all their vaccinations and are neutered. They are male dogs.

Someone who is going to be in India for a long time or would take them when leaving is the best.

Please help Bernaette with this very sad situation.

President's Message

Greetings Ladies!
I hope everyone is doing well and enjoying the temperatures as we cool down this rainy season.
It has been about one year since I had arrived to my new home here in Chennai; looking back if you had asked me how I was doing then, I would’ve said I was great, when in reality I was struggling. Luckily other people saw this and started getting me involved in other activities. It
started slowly with going to a Tae Kwan Do class and then moved on to getting more involved with OWC.
I have to say that this involvement has been one of the saving graces for me. I have meet some of my dearest friends through this group and am always able to participate in an activity toward forwarding OWC.
This is the perfect time for you to think about becoming more involved. There is always help needed on the committees or even just helping out at one of the events is a great way to stay active.
In the meantime, stay well and let’s help support our committees anyway we can!
Stephanie Thompson
President

Ladies Who Lunch

The group will return to sampling Chennai’s culinary delights in September.

Crafts Group

The Crafts group August 7th (2pm onwards) at the home of Suzanne De haes – Kannan Apts 4B;
Chamiers Road 40 (2nd Lane). For more information, please contact Suzanne at 98409-83138 or 2435-2346.

Book Club

Book Club will be held, Thursday, August 9 at the
home of Suzanne De haes:
Kannan Apts 4B,
Chamiers Road 40 (2nd Lane).
There will be Social Chat
at 12:00 pm and a book discussion, followed by a pot luck lunch at 12:30 pm.
The book for this month is:
“A Thousand Splendid Suns”
by Khaled Hosseini.
Mariam is only fifteen when she is sent to Kabul to marry the troubled and bitter Rasheed, who is thirty years her senior. Nearly two decades later, in a climate of growing unrest, tragedy strikes 15-year-old Laila, who must leave her home to join Mariam’s unhappy household. Laila and Mariam are to find consolation in each other, their friendship to grow as deep as the bond between sisters, as strong as the ties between mother and daughter. With the passing of time comes Taliban rule over Afghanistan, the streets of Kabul loud with the sound of gunfire and bombs, life a desperate struggle against starvation, brutality and fear, the women’s endurance tested beyond their worst imaginings. Yet love can move a person to act in unexpected ways, lead them to overcome the most daunting obstacles with a startling heroism. In the end, it is love that triumphs over death and destruction. This book is an unforgettable portrait of a wounded country and a deeply moving story of family and friendship. It is a beautiful, heart-wrenching story of an unforgiving time, an unlikely bond and and indestructible love.
If you are interested in coming to Book Club this month, don’t be deterred if you haven’t already read the book! We look forward to seeing you.

Social Welfare

It’s good to have the Social Welfare Committee back in full swing after the summer break with their ongoing commitment and support of our regular charities. These include Mother Theresa Homes of Shishyu Bhavan, Royapuram, and Nirmal Hriday in Ennore, both of which look after the most desperate and destitute members of our community; Cheshire Homes for the physically challenged and multiple handicapped residents in Thiruvanmiyur, and St. George’s Home for the Elderly in Royapuram.
Eleonor visits Shishyu Bhavan every Tuesday afternoon to play with the children; Maureen keeps a regular eye on Cheshire Home and Lakshmi visits St. George’s and ensures the elderly ladies have not only their regular supplies but also their special birthday cakes. Suzanne has joined Maureen the last couple of times visiting Ennore providing provisions to keep them going in between their bi-monthly visits.
Aruna and Eleonor are working on the schedule for English classes and playgroups for Andhra Mahila Sabha physically and mentally challenged residents which begin again in August.
We were delighted to be able to support some very poor families in Ennore in paying the schools fees of 20 of their children. The support was earmarked with proceeds from some backpayments of our ‘At Home in Madras – A Handbook for Chennai.’ The book may be a bit out of date but the proceeds still do go to help support the underprivileged.
We regret to announce the sad demise of Mr. Chapman, Principal of St. George’s Creche for slum children. He had worked for tirelessly with them for many years and his death was premature and untimely.
Suzanne Townsend has touched the heart of her friends who have donated generously to her account and she has identified a couple of charities through this personal
support. In July, together with Jenny and Martha, they did a number of visits:
We went to Don Bosco orphanage, Riber Memorialcreche and Mercy Home. In Don Bosco on
the 1st July we delivered a set of new clothes for 120 kids, a pack for each child containing educational items of notebook, pencil, rubber, sharpener and slate. A big bucket of toys, bananas and nuts and basic hygiene products were provided including toothpastes, shampoos and detergents and towels for each child.
In Riber Memorial creche for slum children aged between 3-5 years, we visited the small children a few times, and on Sat 14th July we delivered educational packs to over 100 slum children who come every evening to study in their four centres.
In Mercy home they have two care areas; one for old people and a creche for slum children aged between 3-5 years. We visited both, and sponsored 5 school children with their school fees, uniforms and educational items.
We will be regularly visiting these places.
Volunteers more than welcome.

Get to Know Members of OWC Committee

Suzanne Townsend: This is our second posting in India- we loved it so much we came back for more! It is true. The place grows on you and gets under your skin and when you return home you miss the place terribly. When we were offered the chance to come back we jumped at it.
My love of traveling started when I was in college and every summer I went to the US working and traveling. After college it was off to Australia for a year for more work and travel with my friends. Worked in Ireland training as an accountant for 3 ½ years and then spent a year traveling all over the world.
My husband is working in an IT company over here. Our first posting was in 2001-2003. The first time I worked here full time. Then we went back home to Ireland for 3 years where I worked away until we came back to India in June last year. This time my job is officially to "mind my husband" and to take some time off. I am loving it. There is so much to do here, so many classes to take (golf, bridge, Spanish, French, yoga, gym, bollywood dancing ) and participate in, lovely people to meet and of course so many places to visit and travel around. Last month I was up in Orissa visiting the tribal villages- amazing.
I have recently become more involved in the charity side of OWC which is keeping me busy at the moment and I am also squeezing in a bit of study for more accounting exams at home in Ireland which I am taking every year.
