President's Message April 2007

It is a truism that as you get older time marches past even faster, and that has certainly been the case with
regards to my year as President. Mind you, when it comes to age, I’m only admitting to being 35 plus tax!

If I set out with any aim in mind a year ago, it was simply to make the OWC fun for all, try and improve on last
years fundraising and to emerge with everyone on the Committee still talking to me! I’d like to think I have managed
on all three counts.

On the fun side, we have seen the introduction of the popular Tiffin Club as well as the new Craft Group, whilst
continuing with our Book Club, Ladies Who Lunch and the Children’s Playgroup.

For me personally the hi-lights have been the sell-out Welcome Back Lunch with our International theme at the
Courtyard Marriott in August, the ever popular Santa’s Brunch, where even I got to sit on Santa’s knee (!) and
our Mardi Gras Ball in October where we improved on last years fundraising total.

As they say in all the best speeches, none of this would have been possible without the hard work and dedication
of the team behind me, in this case the Executive Committee. A big thank you to each and every one of you
(and anyone else I managed to rope in along the way).

When I hand over at the AGM on the 25th April, I will be proud to say that I have been President of the OWC.
It is a great club, with over a 30 year history of providing support to us expat ladies whilst at the same time
putting something back into the community we live in. Something truly to be proud of.

Thank you,
Jo Frogbrook

April Ladies Who Lunch

The last ladies who lunch was Japanese at Dahlias. The food was only gorgeous and the staff could not have been more pleasant. I know I will be back there as I am sure the other ladies will. Anyone who didn't make it should try it out sometime. It can be a bit tricky to find. Go in the side entrance of the Kaveri complex and it is on the right hand side on the ground floor. Well worth it.

The next ladies who lunch will be a Lebanese style.

Wed 11th April at 12.30

at Cedars

March President's Message

Firstly a look back at an event that happened in January, namely the Garden Tea. As we ‘go to print’ with the newsletter at the end of the month and the cut-off date is the 24th I couldn’t include a mention in February’s newsletter as the Garden Tea hadn’t taken place!

So, to recap, a big thank you to everyone who went to the effort of being elegantly dressed, and very lovely you all looked. Our two prize winners, Nicola and Meghan looked especially gorgeous and a big thank you as well to Amethyst for donating the flower arrangements which were given as prizes.
A special mention must also be made for our musical duo, Stephanie and Suzanna, who provided us with entertainment on the day. Well done ladies!
Also, thank you to Lynne Connor for the use of the Cottingley gardens which were a fitting backdrop to the lovely ladies, and to The Park Hotel for the Garden Tea fayre.

Continuing on the food theme, last month’s general meeting at Wonton was a true chocolate lovers delight and many went home clutching boxes of chocolates for their loved ones on Valentine’s Day (or perhaps you just kept them for yourselves?!). Anyway, it was good to get tips on how to impress your guests with your homemade chocolates.

With all the emphasis on food over the last couple of month’s we have decided that March’s meeting is going to be slightly more cerebral, namely a talk on Indian culture, so please come along and find out more about the country we are living in.

Finally, looking ahead to April we have our AGM where we will be announcing our new committee. However, as it stands at the moment we have a number of positions vacant as many of the present committee will be leaving India and so I would like to make a heartfelt plea to our members to PLEASE consider volunteering.
As I pointed out at our last meeting, without a committee there is no OWC and the network of support that it provides. We have a hard-core of members who help out and put themselves forward every time but it is a tiny minority considering our membership, so if you are looking for something that will only take up a few hours of your time every month and is fun as well, then please contact me as soon as possible.

Thank you,
Jo Frogbrook, President

March General Meeting

Wednesday 14 March
Park Sheraton
10.00am
Rs 250

This month’s meeting has an Indian flavour and we will be treated to a wonderful talk and slide show by Mr D K Hari, who has given many talks to such organisations as IWA on India and its culture. Either if you are new to Chennai or an old hand this is a must to help you learn about this amazing and complex country and its people.

The book ladies will be selling books, magazines and DVDs and there will be, of course, refreshments courtesy of the Park Sheraton.

We have had to negotiate a new rate with the Park Sheraton and as a consequence please note that from this month the fee will be Rs250.
