OWC Chettinad Trip
Thursday, 21st September—Monday 25th September
Situated south of Chennai, Chettinad is reputed to be famous for South India’s hottest food and is home to some of their wealthiest merchant families. Many of the villages are now semi-deserted but the houses retain a charm and distinctive style all of their own.
These houses are mainly used for large family celebrations, such as weddings, and are closed for the remainder of the year. We are fortunate, however, to have Lakshmi Chockalingam as a member, who’s family comes from Chettinad and who has offered us the opportunity to stay at her family’s Bangala (guest house) so that we can see some of these houses and also take in the local sites such as the markets, antique shops and temples.
The suggested itinerary is as follows:
Thusday night: depart by overnight train from Egmore, Chennai to Trichy
Friday: day in Chettinad exploring old houses
Saturday: day in Chettinad visiting antique shops
Sunday morning: at village market, lunch and dinner at Sterling Swamimalai with visit to their bronze workshop, visit to temple.
Sunday night: depart by overnight train from Tanjore to Chennai
Cost—Based on twin sharing basis RS 5,000 per night including all meals and soft drinks/tea/coffee.
Not included—Train ticket 1st class a/c sleeper Rs 1061 one way or 2nd class a/c sleeper Rs 617 on way. Lunch and dinner at Swamimalai. Local transport.
